In Case the Take-Home-Page didn't make it home this week. This is what we talked about in RAKlets on May 24, 2013:
The Church is God’s people in community - The Response to the Gospel Call- Acts 2:42-47
This week we started our study of the church by asking the first of many questions...what is church? It might seem like a simple question, but we discovered that its a question a lot of people get wrong. We learned that church is God’s people in community and that the things that the first church did in Acts 2 are the same things that churches are called to do today.
Day 1- Read Acts 2:42-47 - - These verses talk about the things that the early church was busy doing. Make a list of all of the things that the church did and draw a series of pictures or cartoons or the church in action. Notice verse 47....what was happening as a result of all of this?

Day 2- Read 1 Corinthians 12:12-27 - - One of the illustrations that the New Testament uses to describe the church (or God’s people) is a body, with each part working together. Try to imagine what your body would be like without some of the parts or with lots of the same parts (like if your whole body was an eye...how would you walk). Play a game as a family where everyone has to work together to accomplish a task.... one person can be the eyes (all others blindfolded), one the hands, one the feet, etc.

Day 3-Read Acts 3:1-10- - One of the things that our main passage for the week mentioned is that many signs and wonders happened. These miracles were signs that God used to point people to Him and help them to believe. Act out this miracle. Pay special attention to how the people reacted when they saw the man walking.

Day 4- Read Acts 3:11-16 - - Another thing that our passage for the week mentioned is that the people devoted themselves to the apostles teaching. That means that they listened and learned from the apostles (guys like Peter & John). What was the point that Peter made in this teaching that he did right after healing the crippled man? With whose power did he say he was able to heal the man?

Day 5- Read Acts 4:32-37 - - Another thing mentioned that the early church did was that they sold their stuff and shared with people in need. How do the verses you read today help you to understand more about what was going on in this church? What did the apostles continue to do all the time? What does it mean to testify to the Lord Jesus? What kinds of things were they testifying about Jesus?
Get out some blocks & encourage them to build a church building. As they work talk with them about the things they see around them in the church building. Talk about reasons why we come to church and what people do at church- to learn about God, to sing songs to God, etc. Remind them that they heard on Friday that church is God’s people, not the building.
Learn the Memory Verse
But you - - point to friends will receive power - - strong arms when the Holy Spirit comes on you; - - 2 hands above your head and descend to your head and you - - point to friends will be my witnesses - - cup hands around mouth as if speaking in Jerusalem - - point down and in all Judea and Samaria, - - point around the room and to the ends of the earth.- - make a big circle with your arms Acts 1:8
THIS WEEKS STORY: The First Church- Acts 2:42-47
Each week we come to church to learn about God. Do you think that getting together with other people to learn about God is something new that we just thought up? No, the Bible tells us that not long after Jesus died on the cross and rose again and went back to heaven, that people started getting together to worship God and learn about Jesus. These groups of people were called churches.

Sometimes when we hear the word church, we think of a building. (show a picture of a church building), but the Bible tells us that the church is the people who meet inside the building who are there to learn about God.

What are some of the things that we learn about God when we come to church? (draw the following things or show pictures as you tell the story.)
(1) We learn that God made the world, (2) we learn that Jesus Came to Earth, (3) we learn that Jesus died on the cross to pay for our sin (4) we learn that 3 days later Jesus came back to life, so we can live with Him forever, (5) we learn that the Bible is God’s Word and it teaches us all about Jesus and what it means to be God’s children.

All of those things are things that we learn when we come to church. The cool thing is that those are the same things that people learned about at the first church. In the Bible (Acts 2:42-47) we can read that the first church did the following things. The first church got together and listened to men teach about Jesus. The first church talked about what Jesus did. The first church prayed together. The first church sang songs to God.

Those are all things that we do when we come to church.
